Former spokesman for the self-proclaimed Renamo military junta, João Machava, is satisfied with his welcome and social reintegration in the city of Chókwè, Gaza province, to where he returned after his Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) process in November.
In an interview with Domingo, João Machava, who holds the rank of colonel, spoke of his experience of living in Chókwè, saying that reconciliation between Mozambicans was on the right track.
Forgiveness among Mozambican is a reality, Machava says. “If the pace continues like this, Mozambique could serve as an example of a peaceful coexistence between people who were once at odds.”
The officer, who was chief of staff at the Ribye base on the border of Funhalouro and Mabote districts in Inhambane, says that, after leaving Chókwè in 2014 to join Renamo, he never thought it would be possible to return to his family, friends and neighbours and resume civilian life.
