Mozambique: Ex-president's son guilty in hidden debt scandal released on parole

The former Mayor of Maputo, David Simango, was sentenced on Wednesday by the4rth section of the Judicial Court of the Municipal District of Ka Mpfumo, at the conclusion of a trial which began on 21 May 2021.
David Simango had been indicted, in March 2020, with the crimes of Acceptance of Offer or Promise and Abuse of Position and Function.
The defendant was sentenced to one year and six months in prison and 15 months of fine at the daily rate of one minimum wage. The prison sentence was converted into a fine.
The apartment (one living room and two rooms), located on the fifth floor of the “24 de Julho” building and valued at US$457,000, had been seized by the court during the judicial processa and has now been declared property of the State, along with its 120,000.00 meticais monthly rents.
