In keeping up with his inaugural speech, the new president of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, has reduced the number of ministries and state secretariats equivalent to ministries from 24 to 20. Yesterday, the Office of the President of the Republic announced the abolition of ten ministries and three state secretariats and the creation of nine new ministries.
According to the press release issued at the end of the day on Thursday, Daniel Chapo abolished the Ministry of Economy and Finance; the Ministry of Transport and Communications; the Ministry of Culture and Tourism; the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; the Ministry of Land and Environment; the Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries; the Ministry of Industry and Commerce; the Ministry of Labour and Social Security; the Ministry of Education and Human Development; and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. He also abolished the state secretariats of Youth and Employment, of Sports, and of Technical and Professional Education.
In turn, the president created the following ministries: Ministry of Finance; Ministry of Economy; Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of the Environment and Fisheries; Ministry of Transport and Logistics; Ministry of Education and Culture; Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Welfare; Ministry of Youth and Sports; Ministry of Communications and Digital Transformation; and Ministry of Planning and Development.
The following ministries will remain in place: Ministry of Defence; the Ministry of the Interior; the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; the Ministry of State Administration and Civil Service; the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources; the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources; the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs; the Ministry of Combatants; the Ministry of Presidency for Civil Affairs; and the Ministry of Presidency for Military Affairs.
Adding the nine new ministries to the 11 still intact, the new government should be composed of 20 ministers and a prime minister, who will join the President of the Republic as head of government. Meanwhile it should be emphasized that, almost 48 hours after the inauguration of the new head of state, we still do not have a government.
