The state-owned Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) said this Sunday that the company’s new manager, Dane Kondic, must work on an “exclusive basis”. The statement came after Kondic’s appointment as chairman of the board of directors of Air Botswana was announced.
“An extraordinary meeting was called for this Sunday, June 29, 2025, during which the board reaffirmed that the exercise of the functions of chairman of the LAM management committee must be carried out on an exclusive basis, ensuring total dedication to the company’s restructuring process,” reads a statement from the Mozambican flag carrier sent to the media.
At issue is the appointment of Dane Kondic, chairman of the LAM management committee since May, to the position of chairman of the board of directors of Air Botswana, as was announced by the neighbouring country’s carrier on Friday,

Air Botswana welcomes its newly appointed Board of Directors. Their appointment marks a new chapter as the airline continues its journey of service, resilience, and national pride,” reads an announcement by the airline seen by Lusa on Sunday.
According to LAM, Kondic was appointed non-executive chairman of Air Botswana’s board of directors, a consultative position that is held on a “part-time basis and without executive powers”.
In the meantime, LAM’s board of directors met yesterday to assess the “potential risks of conflicts of interest”, since the airlines of Mozambique and Botswana operate in the regional market, considered a “strategic axis” for the expansion of the Mozambican carrier.
“Following the aforementioned meeting, the board decided that Mr Dane Kondic should perform his duties at LAM on an exclusive basis, a decision that was accepted with willingness by the manager himself,” the company states in the document, adding that talks are underway with the manager to “enable the implementation” of the decision, considered “essential for the continuity of the exercise of his duties” as head of LAM’s management committee.
LAM also stated that it maintains “complete confidence” in Dane Kondic’s technical, strategic and leadership capabilities, acknowledging his “fundamental role” in the recovery and modernization of the airline.
Dane Kondic, 60 years old, has dual nationality (Serbian and Australian) and, among other positions in air carriers in several countries, has been chairman of the board of directors of the Portuguese airline euroAtlantic.
The Mozambican State Holdings Management Institute (IGEPE) announced on May 13 that it was removing LAM’s management and appointing a management committee chaired by Dane Kondic.
The decision was taken at an extraordinary general meeting of LAM, as part of the “revitalization process” of the state-owned airline. It was also stated that Marcelino Gildo Alberto, who was chairman of the board of directors, and directors Altino Xavier Mavile and Bruno Miranda, would be removed from office with “immediate effect.”
The appointment of a non-executive board of directors was also approved, comprising representatives of the three state-owned companies that became shareholders of LAM this year, namely Hidroelétrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) and Empresa Moçambicana de Seguros (Emose).
Consulting firm Knighthood Global said in May that it had three months to “stabilise and reposition” LAM, explaining at the time that it had been “appointed by the Government of Mozambique to help revitalise” the company and “the country’s aviation sector in general”.
Mozambique Airlines has been facing operational problems for several years now, due to a reduced fleet and lack of investment, with a number of non-fatal incidents being linked by experts to poor aircraft maintenance.
