The passage of Tropical Cyclone Jude through the province of Nampula in northern Mozambique caused damage estimated at around 100 million meticais (US$1.6 million) to the public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).
In a statement, the company informs its customers and the general public that, due to the bad weather affecting the northern region, the province of Nampula has suffered damage to a 74-kilometre stretch of medium and low voltage power lines, as well as the collapse of six transformer stations (PT) and two high voltage towers on the Namialo-Monapo power line. Regarding energy supply, at least 272,757 customers are still without electricity. “At this time, access roads are interrupted, affecting the restoration of electricity supply to affected
customers,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, normal electricity supply has already been restored to parts of the cities of Nampula, Nacala and the districts of Monapo, Liupo and Mongicual. Meanwhile, the districts of Memba, Nacala, Mossuril, Island of Mozambique, Monapo, Meconta, Muecate, Nacaroa and some neighbourhoods of Nacala Porto remain in the dark. Other districts affected include Ribauè, Mongicual and Mugovolas.
National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) informs that Tropical Depression Jude is now moving towards the Mozambique Channel but continues to influence the weather in districts in the north, centre and south of the country, with heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and strong, gusty winds.
