The death toll from Intense Tropical Cyclone Chido has risen to 73 across the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, and Niassa, following the announcement of 28 additional fatalities yesterday. A total of 543 individuals were injured.
Most deaths occurred in the districts of Ancuabe, Mecúfi, Balama, and Mocímboa da Praia in Cabo Delgado, due to soil erosion and collapsing walls. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) reported that one person remains missing, with search efforts ongoing.
The severe weather affected 329,510 individuals across 65,282 families, and caused the total destruction to 39,133 houses, with another 13,343 partially damaged. The cyclone also damaged 49 healthcare units, 25 places of worship, 34 public buildings, 561 classrooms, 139 schools, 443 teachers, and 55,461 students.
Additionally, 11 telecommunications towers and 10 water supply systems were affected.
The INGD also reported the loss of 1,302 animals, including cattle, goats, pigs, and poultry.
Furthermore, 454 boats, 136 fishing kits and 116 agricultural areas were adversely affected.
INGD President Luísa Meque presented a report to the government yesterday outlining the current situation of those affected and detailing those things urgently required to help victims return to normal life.
