Mozambique customs on Wednesday (01-05) seized US$100,000 in cash at Mavalane International Airport, in the possession of a young couple living in Maputo.
The young people were approached by Customs officers as they were about to travel to China, and found to be in possession of cash amounts above those allowed by law.
Between them, the pair were carrying a total of US$100,000. Customs authorities said the couple claimed to be unaware of the limit established by law, which is US$10,000.
The couple, frequent travellers on the Mozambique-China route, claimed that the money was intended to purchase hair in China, to later sell in Mozambique.
The money was confiscated by the authorities and deposited at the Bank of Mozambique (BdM) pending legal procedures.
