Mozambique: AdRM warns of water supply restrictions over the weekend
Money was hidden in the boot and benches of the car.
On Monday, Mozambican Customs arrested two men of Pakistani nationality in the province of Manica as they were about to enter Zimbabwe with US$424,792 of undeclared money.
The detainees are brothers Irfan and Rehan Majeed, both residents of Mozambique for 16 years and traders in the Manica capital, Chimoio.
The two men were stopped driving a Toyota Spacio car near the Machipanda border. The money was hidden in suitcases and in the car seats, and was not declared to the Mozambique customs authorities.
A customs source quoted by the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM) said the seizure was the result of a coordinated effort among various institutions in the area and exchanging information in order to combat smuggling and cross-border crime in Manica.
The same source said that there were legal Bank of Mozambique procedures for the transfer of such amounts, and the two citizens would be brought to the bar of criminal accountability. Irfan Majeed told reporters that the amount was being transported to the city of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, where he intended to hand it over to its rightful owner.
“I am a merchant in Chimoio. I took the money to Zimbabwe to deliver it to its owner. It’s the first time I’ve done this kind of thing,” Irfan Majeed said.
Rehan Majeed also denied knowing anything. “I was just going along with my brother to drop the money off. I didn’t know I was committing a crime.”
