A total of 349 bales of fabrics, 251 of shirts and 161 of T-shirts, were seized by customs authorities last week at the Port of Nacala, in Nampula, because of false declarations by the importer about the true content of the cargo.
According to the director of customs in Nacala-Porto, José Saltiel, the goods are valued at more than US$163,000, and appropriate import duties could be around four million meticais.
“The importer paid only 421,000 meticais in customs duties, but the amount due could be as much as 3.8 million meticais,” Saltiel explained.
The case concerning the seizure of goods has already been filed in the Customs Court for further action.
