The Office for the Fight against Corruption in the Central Mozambican province of Sofala (GPCCS) on Friday detained a customs officer stationed at the Northern Inspection Post in the Port of Beira.
A statement from the GPCCS said that the officer was detained at around 20.00 after a whistle blower revealed the corrupt scheme. He was caught red-handed taking bribes from a truck driver, who was paying him to speed up the issuing of customs documents.
“During the investigations, the truck driver concerned confirmed that the practice of illicit payments at that post is not only recurrent but has been established as an informal procedure which is general knowledge among the truck drivers who use the port”, said the GPCCS.
The GPCCS said that the customs agent who demanded the bribe, instead of acting with integrity, transparency and respect for the principles that govern the public administration, “chose instead to violate legality and to undermine the trust of citizens in State institutions”.
The customs officer and the truck driver (who were not named in the GPCCS release) are being charged with crimes of corruption which carry a prison sentence of up to five years. The case has been sent to the Beira City Law Court.
The GPCCS reaffirmed its commitment to an implacable struggle against corruption and guaranteed that it would take a strong position against all offenders.
It urged all those involved in illicit practices to abandon them at once and appealed to citizens to remain vigilant against all forms of corruption in defence of ethics, legality and good governance.
