Mozambique: Sale of LAM may amplify financial crisis - AIM report

The Director General of Mozambique Customs, Osvaldo Correia, presided over the opening ceremony of the Regional Workshop on Illegal Wildlife Trade and Risk Management in Maputo last week.
The event was promoted by the World Customs Organization (WCO) in which the organization implements institutional capacity-building activities and operational initiatives, aiming to deal with challenges identified by member states, regarding the fight against illegal trade in wildlife and timber products protected under the International Convention on Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Plants and Flora.
In his speech, Osvaldo Correia praised the choice of Mozambique as the venue for the training and reiterated the AT’s commitment to contributing to the achievement of the objectives set out in the matter in question. He mentioned the accreditation by the WCO, of an employee of the institution as Technical and Operational Advisor to the multilateral organization in matters of combating the illegal trade of fauna and flora.
Correia also shared some statistical data, having mentioned that from 2014 to 2018, Customs registered 61 seizures of products such as ivory, rhino horn, shark fin, seahorse, lion claws and teeth, of which more than 60% were seized at Maputo International Airport.
The workshop will last five days and will include participants from the customs and Interpol areas of Mozambique, South Africa, Angola, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
