Authorities in Mozambique have foiled the attempted illegal export to neighbouring South Africa of 430 bags of charcoal across the border at Ressano Garcia, Moamba district, Maputo province.
The charcoal, the export of which is prohibited by law, was seized on Sunday, at Kilometre Four in Ressano Garcia, by Mozambique Customs in partnership with the National Agency for Environmental Quality Control (AQUA).
Quoted by Radio Mozambique, the head of AQUA’s Central Forestry Inspection Department, Arsénio Tchelene, said that the charcoal came from the province of Inhambane, and that the owner would be liable to a fine of 1,300,000 meticais – around US$20,346 at current exchange rates.
AQUA has now foiled six attempts to illegally export charcoal from Maputo province, Tchelene said.
