The president of the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), Agostinho Vuma, was shot in Maputo, the Mozambican capital yesterday, and is hospitalised, announced members of the organisation.
The 44-year-old businessman and parliament member for the Frelimo party was intercepted by two armed individuals in his office building on Avenida Josina Machel, near downtown Maputo, said Leonel Muchina, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) at a press conference.
The businessman and politician was wounded with two shots, and immediately taken to the Instituto do Coração (ICOR], where he unerwent surgery and remains hospitalised in the emergency rooms.
The unidentified shooters left the building and fled in a car parked nearby, according to witnesses at the scene.
Today, (July 12), Agostinho Vuma remained hospitalised in the Emergency Department of the Instituto do Coração. Information provided by one of the members of the CTA indicates that he underwent a surgical intervention which went well although, at the moment, his clinical condition is being carefully monitored and still a matter of concern.
This Sunday morning, the family of Agostinho Vuma went to the Instituto do Coração to learn about the evolution of his clinical condition.
Members of the CTA were also in the enclosure of that private health unit, where Manuel Pereira, a member of the CTA infrastructure department and president of the Mozambican Contractor Federation, spoke to the press.
“This is very reserved so we are here like you without knowing much about the state of his health because the doctors are still working, so we don’t know if President Vuma is out of danger or not, so what I say is that we need to be calm and let time tell, we will continue to work and let our clinicians work to see if tomorrow in the afternoon they can give us some information ”.
Members of the CTA’s management structure entered and left the Instituto do Coração and others remained in place to closely monitor the evolution of Agostinho Vuma’s clinical condition. On the outside, the police presence around this private health unit was undisguised.
The case is being followed up by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
The spokesman for the PRM command in the city of Maputo said yesterday that it was premature to give any possible reasons for the crime, adding that the police have no formal record of threats against the businessman.
Several businesspeople gathered yesterday at the door of ICOR, awaiting information about the health status of Agostinho Vuma, who, they said, entered conscious.
Meanwhile, also yesterday, the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) condemned the attack on deputy Agostinho Vuma, a member of the ruling party.
“We want to condemn this cowardly act,” said Sérgio Pantie, head of Frelimo’s parliamentary bench. “We hope that the authorities may clarify this shooting as soon as possible. The country cannot forgive and allow acts of this nature,” he added.
Agostinho Vuma is a founding member of the Association of Contractors of the City of Maputo, of which he was president, and was later in the genesis of the Mozambican Federation of Contractors (FME).
He is also a Frelimo deputy in the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, since 2015, when he was elected by the constituency of Gaza, south of the country.
