The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).
Valid until 2026, the agreement constitutes a milestone attesting to the consolidation of results obtained from a memorandum signed in 2018, and the enduring relationship between the two institutions.
The newly signed MoU aims principally to support and mobilise the private sector to increase its participation, contribution and commitment to improving the nutrition and access to nutritious and safe food, including fortified food.
The agreement involves strengthening the institutional capacity of the CTA and its provincial business delegations in matters of nutrition and food systems and respective advocacy, with a special focus on the recovery of food systems in the province of Cabo Delgado.
“The CTA took an important step by realigning its Agribusiness Division, changing its name to the Agribusiness, Food Industry and Nutrition Division,” underlined Gaspar Cuambe, GAIN Mozambique’s acting Country Director. “This reformulation clearly shows the vision of the CTA leadership to act from production to the final consumer, ultimately seeking to ensure that diets are truly more diversified, abundant and easy to access for all citizens.”
The main areas of intervention established in the MoU are to support GAIN as the main co-facilitator of the Sun Business Network in Mozambique, and transitioning the governance of the Network of Companies for the Expansion of Nutrition in Mozambique (SBNMOZ) to the CTA, as well as its expansion nationwide. At the moment, SBNMOZ is established in six provinces: Nampula, Cabo Delgado, Manica, Sofala, Zambézia and Tete.
Likewise, GAIN will support the activities of CTA’s Agribusiness, Food Industry and Nutrition Division in providing technical assistance to its members and the private sector in general, with the aim of technically improving the quality and safety of the foods that are sold on the market.
The support extends to research and advocacy actions to improve the business environment in general, with a focus on activities linked to food and nutrition security.
As part of their advocacy actions on matters of nutrition and food systems, CTA and GAIN were holding the 4th Annual SBNMOZ Conference in Maputo this Wednesday, under the theme “Accelerating the Transformation of Food Systems through Nutrition in Mozambique”.
The meeting will address various topics of interest, such as mixed finance in food systems, the business model for poultry production in Mozambique, the fisheries value chain and its impact on nutrition in Cabo Delgado, among others.
