Crocodiles in the Kalachane River are creating panic in the Impaputo community, Namacha district, Maputo province, after a 14-year-old boy was killed in an attack this week.
There are now numerous crocodiles in the Kalachane River, which is crossed by National Road Number 3, connecting Mozambique to the Kingdom of Eswatini.
It is suspected that they were washed there by floodwaters following the intense rain recorded recently, with the passage of Severe Tropical Storm Filipo.
Village head Arsénia Mangue explains that it is not advisable to carry out any type of activities in or near the river at this point, nor until the crocodiles in the region have been neutralised.
The body of the 14-year-old boy who lost his life on Monday after being attacked by crocodiles in the river was located, and buried this Wednesday.
The victim, a Grade 9 student, and his 11 classmates from Escola Secundária Marcelino dos Santos, left a physical education class and went to the river, where the boy was attacked by a reptile and dragged off.
The authorities in Impaputo are also advising the Catholic faithful in the area to avoid the river when they go looking for palm fronds for the Palm Sunday celebrations this weekend.
