Mozambique is experiencing a slight increase in the number of active Covid-19 cases as a result of mobility during the festive season. The National Institute of Health (INS) warns that it is necessary to remain alert and reinforce vaccination and prevention measures to prevent the country from being surprised by a further wave of infections.
It has been a while since the number of Covid-19 cases in the country stopped being alarming, but the last month has seen a slight increase in the number of tested and active cases.
For example, from 5 December to 6 January, the number of active cases rose from 124 to 276 – an increase of 152 cases.
Although the number of active cases recorded has doubled, the National Institute of Health says that the figure is not worrying in comparison with the numbers for the same period last year.
“There is still no consistency regarding the increase in cases at provincial level. This means that we must continue to monitor whether there is any consistency. However, although there is no consistency at the provincial level, this discreet increase is cause for alarm,” National Institute of Health deputy director Eduardo Samo Gudo says.
Although Covid waves have declined worldwide, China is experiencing the largest surge in cases since the outbreak of the pandemic, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has already expressed concern about the situation.
Eduardo Samo Gudo says that it is not yet time to apply restrictive measures.

The XXB variant, which is circulating in China, is also present in Mozambique, but is not yet thought to be cause for concern.
The INS also clarifies that none of the three variants currently circulating in the world are associated with severe disease or reduced test performance.
