The Mozambican health authorities reported a further 2,238 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease on Friday and Saturday.
But since, over the same period, there were 3,382 recoveries, the number of active cases of Covid-19 continued to decline.
According to a Saturday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 1,181,210 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 4,406 of them in the previous 24 hours.
3,430 of these tests gave negative results, while 976 people tested positive for the virus. This brought the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 218,797.
Of the new cases identified on Saturday, 496 were women and 480 were men. 136 were under the age of 15. The provinces with the largest number of new cases were Zambezia (222 – 22.7 per cent) and Maputo city (183 – 18.8 per cent). There were also 120 cases from Sofala, 85 from Inhambane, 83 from Gaza, 75 from Tete, 63 from Maputo province, 59 from Nampula, 36 from Manica, 32 from Niassa, and 18 from Cabo Delgado.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) fell from 29.03 per cent on Thursday to 24.15 per cent on Friday, and to 22.15 per cent on Saturday. While this decline is welcome news, the figures still mean that over one in five people tested are infected with the coronavirus.
Over the same 24 hour period, 29 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (14 in Maputo, five in Tete, four in Niassa, three in Nampula, two in Inhambane and one in Zambezia), while 14 new cases were admitted (eight in Maputo, and one each in Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Zambezia, Sofala, Inhambane and Gaza).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 204 on Thursday to 200 on Friday, to 178 on Saturday. 84 of these patients (47.2 per cent) were in Maputo, 25 in Manica, 12 in Nampula, 11 in Gaza, nine in Sofala, nine in Inhambane, eight each in Matola, Zambezia and Niassa, two in Cabo Delgado and two in Tete.
The Ministry also reported a further six deaths from Covid-19 on Saturday. These victims were four women and two men aged between 35 and 86. Four of the deaths occurred in Maputo city, one in Maputo province and one in Niassa. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,123.
The recoveries reported on Friday and Saturday, brought the total number of recoveries in Mozambique to 180,990, which is 82.7 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active Covid-19 cases fell from 36,838 on Thursday to 36,020 on Friday, and to 35,680 on Saturday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo province, 7,966 (22.3 per cent of the total); Maputo city, 7,668; Manica, 3,314; Inhambane, 2,948; Nampula, 2,626; Gaza, 2,419; Sofala, 2,324; Zambezia, 2,299; Niassa, 1,877; Cabo Delgado, 1,203; and Tete, 1,036.
The Ministry also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 91,802 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brings the number of people fully vaccinated against the disease to 8,218,070, while 10,192,406 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
In five of the 11 provinces, over 50 per cent of the eligible adults are now fully vaccinated. They are: Nampula (71 per cent), Cabo Delgado (56 per cent), Manica (55 per cent), Gaza (53 per cent), and Inhambane (52 per cent).
Maputo City and Niassa are both approaching 50 per cent. Sofala, where only 30 per cent of the eligible population are fully vaccinated, is at the bottom of this table.
