Mozambique: Beira street children, teenagers return to school

The Mozambican health authorities reported on Sunday that the positivity rate among people tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes the Covid-19 respiratory disease has continued to decline.
The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be infected by the virus) fell from 29.03 per cent on Thursday to 24.15 per cent on Friday, to 22.15 per cent on Saturday, and to 20.18 per cent on Sunday.
According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic 1,182,617 people have been tested for the coronavirus, 1,407 of them in the previous 24 hours, 1,123 of these tests yielded negative results, while 284 people tested positive for the virus. This brings the number of people diagnosed with Covid-129 in Mozambique to 219,081.
Of the new cases identified on Sunday, 161 were women and 123 were men. 39 were under the age of 15. The new cases were scattered across the country – 59 in Sofala, 59 in Inhambane, 46 in Zambezia, 37 in Maputo city, 33 in Niassa, 18 in Nampula, 12 in Gaza, 10 in Maputo province, five in Tete, three in Cabo Delgado, and two in Manica.
Over the same 24 hour period, 14 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (four in Maputo, four in Manica, two in Matola, two in Nampula, one in Cabo Delgado and one in Inhambane), while 17 new cases were admitted (eight in Maputo, five in Manica two in Matola, one in Gaza and one in Niassa).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 178 on Saturday to 177 on Sunday. 85 of these patients (48 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also 25 cases in Manica, 12 in Gaza, 10 in Nampula, nine in Niassa, nine in Sofala, eight each in Zambezia, Matola and Inhambane, two in Tete and one in Cabo Delgado.
The Ministry release reported a further four deaths from Covid-19. These latest victims were three women and one man, aged between 34 and 79. Three of them died in Maputo city, and one in Manica. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,127.
No recoveries from Covid-19 were reported on Sunday. Thus the total number of recoveries remains 180,990, which is 82.6 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid 19 rose from 35,680 to 35,960. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo province, 7,976 (22.2 per cent of the total); Maputo city, 7,702; Manica, 3,315; Inhambane, 3,307; Nampula, 2,644; Gaza, 2,431; Sofala, 2,383; Zambezia, 2,345; Niassa, 1,910; Cabo Delgado, 1,206; and Tete, 1,041.
The Ministry also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 50,270 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brings the number of people fully vaccinated against the disease to 8,327,270, and 10,267,635 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
