According to the latest statistics from the Mozambican Ministry of Health. the number of new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease reported daily has now dropped to below 100, and the positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be infected with the coronavirus that causes Covid-19) is also declining sharply.
Since the pandemic began, 1,206,427 people have been tested for the virus, 801 of them on Monday. 745 of these tests proved negative, and 56 people were positive for the coronavirus.
This compares with 181 positive cases diagnosed on Sunday, 440 on Saturday, 543 on Friday, and 524 on Thursday.
The positivity rate fell from 12.63 per cent on Friday, to 11.66 per cent on Saturday, 11.29 per cent on Sunday, and 6.99 per cent on Monday.
Of the new cases diagnosed on Monday, 29 were men and 27 were women. 10 cases were under 15 years of age. 40 of the cases (71.4 per cent) were from Maputo city. Nowhere else did the number of cases reach double figures. There were seven cases in Maputo province, four in Tete, two in Zambezia, two in Sofala and one in Gaza, No positive cases were reported from the other five provinces.
Over the same 24 hour period, eight Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (six in Maputo, one in Inhambane and one in Niassa), while three new cases were admitted (two in Maputo and one in Gaza).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 103 on Sunday to 96 on Monday. 41 of these patients (42.7 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also 10 patients in Nampula, nine in Niassa, eight in Manica, eight in Gaza, six in Inhambane, four in Zambezia, three in Cabo Delgado, three in Sofala, two in Tete and two in Matola.
The Ministry release reported a further two deaths from Covid-19, a woman and a man aged 24 and 39. One of the deaths occurred in Maputo and the other in Gaza. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,159.
Over this 24 hour period, there were also 3,113 people who made a full recovery from Covid-19 (811 in Niassa, 652 in Maputo city, 381 in Tete, 373 in Maputo province, 363 in Inhambane, 290 in Zambezia, 156 in Gaza and 87 in Cabo Delgado). The total number of recoveries now stands at 205,273, which is 92.2 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
With the number of recoveries greatly surpassing the number of new cases, the number of active cases of Covid-19 also fell sharply – from 18,275 on Sunday to 15,216 on Monday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo province, 6,208 (40.8 per cent of the total); Maputo city, 5,001; Inhambane, 829; Niassa, 799; Zambezia, 778; Gaza, 599; Cabo Delgado, 311; Manica, 245; Tete, 232; Nampula, 127; and Sofala, 87.
The release also reported that, in the same period, a further 2,747 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brings the number fully vaccinated against the disease to 9,036,256, which is 59.4 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
The number of people who have received booster vaccination shots has risen to 1,590. Currently, those eligible to receive the booster dose are health professionals, residents of old people’s homes, and people whose immune systems are suppressed.
