Mozambique: Around 75% of women in Cabo Delgado province illiterate - UNHCR

The Mozambican health authorities on Monday reported that, over the previous 24 hours, 8,079 people were declared fully recovered from the Covid-19 respiratory disease.
This is the largest ever number of recoveries in a single 24 hour period. 2,016 of the recoveries were from Nampula, 1,752 from Inhambane, 1,068 from Manica, 1,037 from Maputo city, 878 from Zambezia, 598 from Maputo province, 416 from Gaza and 314 from Cabo Delgado.
The total number of recoveries now stands at 189,069, which is 86 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
According to a Monday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic,1,183,749 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,132 of them in the previous 24 hours. 823 of these tests yielded negative results, and 309 people tested positive for the virus. This brings the number of cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Mozambique to 219,930.
159 of the new cases identified on Monday were women, and 150 were men. 27 were under the age of 15.
The provinces with the largest number of new cases were Maputo city (105 – 34 per cent) and Zambezia (93 – 30.1 per cent). There were also 50 cases from Inhambane, 20 from Sofala, 11 from Nampula, 10 from Maputo province, eight from Niassa, four from Manica, three from Cabo Delgado, three from Tete, and two from Gaza.
After a steady decline over the previous four days, the positivity rate (the percentage of people tested who prove to be infected by the virus) rose again – from 20.18 per cent on Sunday, to 27.3 per cent on Monday.
Over the same 24 hour period, 28 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (15 in Maputo, four in Zambezia, four in Gaza, two in Manica, and one each in Niassa, Nampula and Matola), while 19 new cases were admitted (eight in Maputo, five in Niassa, three in Nampula, and one each in Tete, Inhambane and Gaza).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 177 on Sunday to 163 on Monday. 76 of these patients (46.6 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also 23 patients in Manica, 13 in Niassa, 12 in Nampula, nine in Inhambane, eight in Sofala, eight in Gaza, six in Matola, four in Zambezia, three in Tete and one in Cabo Delgado.
The Ministry release reported a further five deaths from Covid-19. These latest victims were three women and two men, aged between 27 and 60. Two of the deaths occurred in Maputo city, one in Maputo province, one in Gaza and one in Sofala. The total Mozambican death toll from Covid-19 now stands at 2,132.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 35,960 on Sunday to 28,185 on Monday. The geographical breakdown of the active cases was as follows: Maputo province, 7,387 (26.2 per cent of the total); Maputo city, 6,768; Sofala, 2,402; Manica, 2,251; Gaza, 2,016; Niassa, 1,918; Zambezia, 1,560; Inhambane, 1,305; Tete, 1,044; Cabo Delgado, 895; and Nampula, 639.
The Ministry also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 8,593 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. To date, 8,366,551 people have been fully vaccinated against the disease, while 10,293,197 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
