There are about 340,000 state employees and agents in Mozambique, of which around 8,000 have so far been infected with Covid-19.
Figures collected by the State Administration and Civil Service indicate that, by Monday, the defence and security forces were the worst affected, while the Ministry of the Interior reported 1,383 civil servants with positive results, of which 773 were active and 610 deemed recovered. Thirteen had lost their lives, while 912 police and administrative personnel are currently quarantined.
This is followed by the health sector, with 1,306 employees so far testing positive. Of these, six lost their lives, 734 are actively sick, 572 have recovered and 156 are in home quarantine. The ministries of Public Works and Transport and Communications report fewer than 150 cases.
As for geographic distribution, the city of Maputo has the most civil servants with Covid-19, the latest figures indicating 3,106 infections, with 2,354 recovered, 752 cases still active and 48 deaths among state employees in the capital.
As far as deaths overall are concerned, 57 were registered at central level institutions, and 23 at provincial level.
The national director of planning at the Ministry of State Administration and Civil Service says that the numbers put pressure on the civil service, and infections continue to flood public institutions.
Decree 2/2021 puts the responsibility for pandemic prevention measures on public institutions managers, but, to date, none have been held accountable.
The figures given correspond to 70 percent of public institutions, the rest having not yet reported their figures.
