Mozambique: More than 300 Cabo Delgado schools not functioning after Cyclone Chido

The Mozambican health authorities on Friday reported a further five deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and 117 new cases – but also 979 full recoveries.
According to a Ministry of Health press release, the latest victims were four men and one woman, all of Mozambican nationality, aged between 43 and 76. Three of the deaths occurred in Maputo city, and two in Maputo province. This brings the Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 758,
Since the start of the pandemic, 472,501 people have been tested for the coronavirus that cause Covid-19, 1,479 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of the samples tested, the majority were from the far south – 816 from Maputo city and 153 from Maputo province. There were also 212 from Sofala, 123 from Niassa, 76 from Manica, 43 from Cabo Delgado, 23 from Tete, 18 from Zambezia, and 15 from Inhambane. No tests were reported from Nampula or Gaza.
1,362 of the tests gave negative results, and 117 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brings the number of people diagnosed in Mozambique with Covid-19 to 66,879.
Friday’s positivity rate (the proportion of those tested found to be infected) was 7.9 per cent. This compares with 7.1 per cent on Thursday, 10.7 per cent on Wednesday, 11.2 per cent on Tuesday, and 10.5 per cent on Monday. This is a considerable improvement from the situation in February, when the positivity rate was often over 20 per cent.
Of the cases reported on Friday, 103 are Mozambicans and 14 are foreigners (as usual, the Ministry did not give their nationalities). 66 were men or boys and 51 were women or girls. Only one of the new cases was a child under the age of 15 – the first time this year that the number of children diagnosed with Covid-19 has been so low. Seven were over 65 years old, and in two cases no age information was available.
Most of the new cases were from Maputo city (52) and Maputo province (20). With 61.5 per cent of the new cases between them, Maputo city and province confirmed yet again that the capital and the surrounding area remain the epicentre of the Mozambican epidemic.
There were also 15 cases from Sofala, 15 from Niassa, 13 from Manica, one from Zambezia and one from Tete. Of the provinces where tests were held, Cabo Delgado and Inhambane recorded no positive cases.
In the same 24 hour period, 14 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (10 in Maputo, three in Manica and one in Matola), and 16 new cases were admitted (eight in Maputo, three in Zambezia, three in Manica, and two in Matola).
As of Friday, 112 people were under medical treatment in the Covid-19 wards (down from 115 on Thursday). 69 of these patients (61.6 per cent) were inn Maputo. There were also 17 patients in Zambezia, 10 in Nampula, six in Sofala, four in Inhambane, four in Matola, one in Inhambane and one in Tete. The Covid-19 facilities in Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Manica remained empty.
Of the 979 recoveries reported on Friday, 589 were from Maputo city, 204 from Maputo province, 141 from Nampula, 34 from Zambezia and 11 from Sofala. This brings the total number of recoveries to 55,074, or 82.3 per cent of all those diagnosed with Covid-19 in Maputo.
The number of active Covid-9 cases has now fallen to 11,043 (down from 11,910 on Thursday). The geographical breakdown of these cases was as follows: Maputo city, 8,658 (78.4 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 1,242; Sofala, 251; Inhambane, 213; Niassa, 196; Nampula, 144; Cabo Delgado, 94; Gaza, 85; Manica, 72; Zambezia, 54; and Tete, 34.
