Thousands fleeing Mozambique violence: UN

Mozambique has recorded, in the last 24 hours, another 23 infections with the new coronavirus, after performing 833 tests. This brings the cumulative total of confirmed positive cases from 816 to 839, of which 607 are active cases, with 225 recoveries and five deaths, the Ministry of Health announced on Saturday (June 27).
“The new cases are all of Mozambican nationality,” said the director-general of the National Institute of Health (INS), Ilesh Jani, speaking during the pandemic data update press conference at the Ministry of Health, in Maputo.
The newly diagnosed patients are distributed across the provinces of Cabo Delgado (02), Nampula (18), Zambézia (01), Maputo City (01) and Gaza (01).
“Of the new cases, 15 are male and eight are female. Everyone is in isolation at home and the process of identifying their contacts is underway, ”added Ilesh Jani.
Of the 839 infections so far registered in Mozambique, 769 are locally transmitted and 70 are imported, with five deaths registered.
The health authorities say that two more patients were considered completely recovered in the last 24 hours, bringing the total of recoveries in the country to 225 .
The country has 607 active cases, of which eight are hospitalised, added the director general of the INS.
The provinces with the highest number of infections with the new coronavirus are Nampula (with 253 active cases) and Cabo Delgado, (with 146 active cases).
Since the announcement of the first case of Covid-19 in Mozambique, on March 22, the country tested 27,956 suspected cases, having screened more than 1 million people.
More than 20,000 people suspected of being infected with Covid-19 were placed under home quarantine and just over 2,000 continue being monitored by health authorities.
Mozambique has been in a state of emergency since April 1, twice extended until June 29.
The Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, will on Sunday at 8 p.m. address the nation on the state of emergency, according to a statement from the Mozambican Presidency distributed to the media today.
Various restrictions are in place: all schools are closed, spaces for entertainment and leisure are also closed, all types of events andcrowds are prohibited, and the population is recommended to stay at home if they do not have essential matters to attend to.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 494,000 lives and infected more than 9.82 million people in 196 countries and territories.
