On Monday afternoon, Mozambique surpassed the figure of 1,700 Covid-19 cases, registering 32 more cases in the previous 24 hours.
Of the 32 new cases announced, including three under the age of five, “29 are Mozambican nationals and three are foreign individuals, from Malawi,” deputy director of public health Benigna Matsinhe told a press conference at the Ministry of Health in Maputo.
According to Matsinhe, the new cases come from a total of 1,043 samples tested in national laboratories in the public and private sector and result from the active surveillance action in health units and tracking positive case contacts.
Of these newly diagnosed cases, 14 are in the city of Maputo, nine are in Maputo province, one is in Tete and eight are in Cabo Delgado province. Following World Health Organisation protocol, all of the newly diagnosed patients are in isolation at home and their contacts are currently being traced.
Of the 1,092 active cases in the country, the Mozambican capital Maputo and the province of Cabo Delgado have the highest number, with 242 and 233 active cases respectively.
The country has seen two more patients hospitalised, both in the city of Maputo, bringing to 10 the total number of citizens receiving hospital care.
Of the ten hospitalised patients, seven are in the capital of the country and the other three spread across Inhambane, Tete and Nampula. “All of these patients are suffering from serious chronic diseases associated with Covid-19,” Matsinhe revealed.
Three more Mozambicans, all from Zambezia province, have now recovered from the disease, bringing the cumulative total, since the beginning of the epidemic, to 596.
Taking the latest figures in account, Mozambique so far registered 1,701 Covid-19 cases, 1,541 of which are local and 160 imported. Of that total, 596 have recovered, 11 have died from the disease directly, and two from other causes.
