Mozambique: Food, aid arrives for thousands fleeing Chiúre

The Mozambican health authorities on Monday reported that only 16 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease were detected in the previous 24 hours.
This is the lowest number of new cases reported in any 24 hour period in January, and is a sharp change from the situation in the first few days of the month, when the number of daily new cases was numbered in the thousands.
According to a Monday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic 1,223,852 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 541 of them in the previous 24 hours.
525 of these tests yielded negative results. Of the 16 positive cases, eight were women and eight were men. 10 of the new cases (62.5 per cent) were from Maputo city. There were also two cases from Gaza, and one each from Niassa, Tete, Sofala and Matola. No positive cases were reported from the other five provinces.
The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be infected with the coronavirus) fell from 6.21 per cent on Sunday to just 2.96 per cent on Sunday.
Over the same 24 hour period, eight Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (three in Maputo, two in Niassa, two in Inhambane and one in Gaza), while six new cases were admitted (three in Maputo, two in Tete and one in Niassa).
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 67 on Sunday to 62 on Monday. 29 of these patients (46.8 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also seven patients in Niassa, seven in Tete, four in Manica, three each in Nampula, Sofala, Inhambane and Gaza, and one each in Cabo Delgado, Zambezia and Matola.
The Ministry reported a further three deaths from Covid-19, two men and one woman, aged between 19 and 32. Two of them died in Maputo city and one inn Gaza. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2.173.
The Ministry also announced that on Monday a further 298 people made a full recovery from Covid-19 (199 in Gaza, 51 in Sofala and 48 in Cabo Delgado). This brings the total number of recoveries to 213,368, which is 95.3 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 8,567 on Sunday to 8,282 on Monday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 3,775 (45.6 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 2,329; Zambezia, 496; Inhambane, 435; Niassa, 392; Manica, 292; Cabo Delgado, 194; Tete, 175; Gaza, 133; Nampula, 60; and Sofala, one.
The Ministry release also reported that, in the previous 24 hours, a further 21,123 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease is now 9,525,328, which is 62.2 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
