The Mozambican health authorities reported 138 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease over the weekend – 103 cases on Saturday and 35 on Sunday.
Saturday’s figure was the highest number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed since the 122 cases identified on 1 February.
Of the 35 cases diagnosed on Sunday, 19 were women and 16 were men. They varied in age between three and 72. 33 were Mozambican citizens and two were foreigners (as is standard practice, their nationalities were not disclosed).
21 of the new cases were from the southern province of Gaza, eight from Maputo province and six from Maputo city. There were no positive cases identified in any of the other eight provinces.
According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 1,335,253 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 346 of them on Sunday. 311 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 35 positive cases brought the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 226,463.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) fell from 12.37 per cent on Friday to 11.87 per cent on Saturday to 10.12 per cent on Sunday.
The spurt in new cases has so far not resulted in any increase in Covid-19 deaths or in people falling seriously ill. The Ministry reported no deaths over the weekend, and so the total death toll from the disease in Mozambique remains 2,206.
No Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital on Sunday, and one new case was admitted, in Maputo city. 12 people were undergoing medical treatment in the Covid-19 wards, 10 in Maputo, one in Gaza and one in Manica. Two of these patients were in intensive care and were receiving supplementary oxygen.
No recoveries from Covid-19 were reported on Sunday, and so the total number of recoveries remained 223,659, which is 98.76 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active Covid-19 cases rose from 456 on Friday to 559 on Saturday to 594 on Sunday.
