The Judicial Court of Maputo City has ordered the release of the former president of the Mozambique Airlines (LAM) António Pinto, accused of embezzlement, a source linked to the case told Lusa on Tuesday.
António Pinto left prison during Monday afternoon, following a request submitted on Friday.
In addition to the former president of LAM, Mia Temporário, manager of the company responsible for editing the LAM in-flight magazine, also left prison on Monday afternoon.
The lawyers of the two defendants, accused of embezzling money, claimed in court that their constituents suffer from health problems that justify their being released.
The trial of this case was scheduled for Friday, but the Judicial Court of Maputo City postponed, at the request of the lawyer of a third defendant, Hélder Fumo, former financial administrator of LAM, who, however, is not being held on remand after he paid bail.
The Mozambican judiciary accuses the former president of LAM, António Pinto, the former financial director of the carrier, Hélder Fumo, and the manager of the entity that manages the company’s in-flight magazine, Mia Temporário, of stealing 50 million meticais (about €718,000).
