The Presidents of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, on Wednesday argued for the need to increase the supply of energy between the two countries, with a view to making up for the shortage of this resource on the Malawian side.
‘We are trying to find solutions to the energy shortage,’ said Nyusi.
The Mozambican head of state was speaking to the press after a meeting in Maputo with Lazarus Chakwera, as part of a two-day official visit to Mozambique by the Malawian head of state.
Filipe Nyusi pointed to the ongoing construction of a power cable between the two countries as a sign of Mozambique’s commitment to increase the sale of this resource to Malawi.
‘The construction of the transmission cable in Mozambique is at 52% and the substation is already at 72%. It’s a concrete project that the two countries are developing,’ said the Mozambican president.
Mozambique already sells energy to Malawi, but there is potential to increase the quantities sold to the neighbouring country, he continued.
Nyusi said that the two sides had signed an agreement in the energy sector, aimed at creating the conditions for an increase in supply.
The Mozambican president also highlighted the installation of a terminal for fuel imported by Malawi at the port of Nacala, in northern Mozambique.
The two governments also discussed the ‘concern’ over the use of the two territories by immigrants and judicial co-operation, which will allow Mozambicans imprisoned in Malawi to serve time in their country and vice versa.
The President of Malawi said that the two countries will seal more agreements aimed at intensifying bilateral cooperation, for the benefit of their economies and peoples.
‘We have signed agreements and there will be more agreements, such as on air transport, which brings us closer together as peoples and as a region,’ said Chakwera.
