Mozambique: Chapo launches 2025 agricultural marketing campaign - Watch
The Mozambican government will spend US$2 million (€1.6 million) on vaccines for livestock in areas prone to foot-and-mouth disease, Lusa reports.
The campaign will cover a total of 450,000 animals in the provinces of Manica, Tete, Zambézia, Nampula, Inhambane and Gaza, a source from the National Directorate for Livestock Development told ‘Notícias’ today.
The campaign, which will take at least two years, will also cover cattle within a 20 kilometre radius of conservation areas or near the borders with South Africa, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
“The acquisition of vaccines is already underway,” a source from the National Directorate for Livestock Development revealed.
The Maputo authorities have recently banned the movement and concentration of livestock in some areas after foot-and-mouth was recorded in Magude.
More than 450,000 animals were vaccinated in 2019 within the scope of preventive measures to protect cattle against foot-and-mouth, a highly contagious disease of ruminants and pigs which is caused by seven serotypes of the aphtovirus.
The disease affects animal production, but has no impact on public health. It is endemic in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Central and South America.
