Mozambican volunteers will join an international team helping the World Health Organisation (WHO) research possible cures for the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
“Mozambique will contribute to reaching a conclusion in a short period of time,” deputy director of the National Health Institute in Maputo, Eduardo Samo Gudo, said.
The WHO Solidarity team brings together volunteers from various countries with the aim of assessing possible treatments as quickly as possible. Volunteers from various countries will compare available treatment options, and assess their effectiveness and possible side effects.
“By enrolling patients from several countries, the study aims to quickly find out whether any of the drugs slow the progression of the disease,” a note on the WHO website explains.
Mozambique has 227 cases of Covid-19 infection, with one dead and 71 people accounted fully recovered.
Since the announcement of the first Covid-19 case in the country on 22 March, 9,330 tests have been carried out, with around 15,000 people quarantined out of the more than 795,000 screened, and 1,416 still being monitored by the health authorities.
