Ninety percent of the seed circulating in the provinces of Tete, Manica and Sofala is fake and of dubious origin, the Regional Laboratory Seed Centre says.
According to Manuel Bassicolo, head of the centre, many farmers use corn grain from previous harvests for the next sowing, seeds sometimes falsified by painting by suppliers as a way of deceiving farmers.
Bassicolo explained that the use of non-certified seed contributes to low crop productivity.
To combat the circulation of counterfeit seed on the market, the laboratory regularly carries out inspection work in stores to remove it from the shelves.
