Mozambique: No need to isolate mpox patients in health facilities
Three new citizens were diagnosed as having the Covid-19 virus on Wednesday (13), bringing the cumulative number of those infected in Mozambique to 107. Health officials also said yesterday that they are so far unaware of the sources of the new infections in Inhambane, Beira and the Port of Maputo.
UEM laboratory steps in
Another public laboratory is in operation for testing suspected Covid-19 cases in Mozambique, this time at the Biotechnology Centre of the Eduardo Mondlane University.
This allowed for the record testing, between Tuesday (12) and Wednesday (13), of 356 suspected cases, 16 from Tete Province, 13 from Sofala, 223 from Maputo Province and 107 from Maputo City.
The National Director of Public Health announced that three of the tests performed came back positive for Covid-19, bringing the cumulative number of cases since the pandemic started about a month and a half ago to 107.
One of the newly diagnosed patients has mild symptoms and two currently present no symptoms of the disease at all.
Dr Rosa Marlene outlined the locations of the three new patients.
“In Maputo City, [ there is] one individual of Mozambican nationality, male, 29 years old. [In Maputo City, there is] another Mozambican 40 years old, who is part of a group of Mozambicans repatriated from the Republic of South Africa,” she said.
“In Maputo Province, one individual of Mozambican nationality, male and 34 years old [was tested]. He is also part of a group of Mozambicans repatriated from the Republic of South Africa. He is under isolation at home in Xai-Xai City, [Gaza Province].”
Regarding these three patients, it was clarified that the infected 34-year-old repatriated from South Africa had “left Maputo Province without knowing his health condition, and travelled to Gaza Province on a bus with other citizens”.
As for the 40-year-old infected man, also a repatriated from South Africa, the Ministry of Health did not answer @Verdade’s repeated questions about where is he undergoing home isolation, but the fact is that there is no longer anyone staying at the Manguaza Transit Centre in Moamba District [Maputo Province].
As for the other Maputo City case, the 29-year-old man, health officials were unable to indicate how might he have contracted the coronavirus in Maputo City, but are classifying the case as a local transmission.
Maputo port, Sofala, Inhambane
Another Mozambican, a worker in the Port of Maputo, also contracted the Covid-19 virus in circumstances that have not yet been clarified.
Health authorities are also unaware of how the four patients in Sofala Province contracted the coronavirus, and Minister Armindo Tiago has given instructions to test all individuals in the Mutua Resettlement Centre in Dondo District, where a 10-year-old was diagnosed on Monday (11).
The source of the infection of the 29-year-old Mozambican diagnosed earlier this week in the provincial capital of Inhambane has not yet been identified.
One more patient recovers
The second piece of good news this Wednesday is that another patient has fully recovered from Covid-19. “This is case 14 of Maputo City, an individual of Mozambican nationality, male and 39 years old, who went through [the illness] without symptoms and completed his home isolation [during the disease period]. Mozambique therefore currently has 35 fully recovered patients, with no record of deaths,” Dr Rosa Marlene said.
