Cornelder, the concessionaire of the Port of Beira in central Mozambique, plans to invest 640 million meticais (€8.6 million) in acquiring new equipment and modernizing and expanding its infrastructure, the company announced on Saturday.
“Our vision includes the acquisition of new, modern equipment to reduce handling time at the terminal, which includes containerized cargo, and improve safety. With these innovations, we expect to transport over 300,000 metric tons per year,” Cornelder’s CEO Jan De Vries said during a meeting in Beira, Sofala province, with managers from a multinational logistics company on Saturday.
According to the manager, the investment includes the acquisition of 30 forklifts and the expansion of warehouses, which currently occupy an area of 3,000 square metres, doubling the volume of cargo capable of being handled at the port, which is much used by neighbouring countries for importing and exporting goods.
Jan De Vries added that Cornelder Mozambique “has several innovative projects in the pipeline to make the Port of Beira an excellent logistics platform”, not only for Sofala province but also for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) generally.
The Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Logistics announced in February that studies were underway to address truck congestion at the port, one of the country’s most important.
In October 2023, the Mozambican government announced plans to invest US$290 million (€278 million) in the expansion and modernization of the Port of Beira.
According to budget execution accessed by Lusa at the time, Mozambican ports in 2023 handled more than 63,000 tons of goods, practically half of which in Maputo – an increase of 12.3% compared to 2022.
