Fewer consumers are writing cheques in Mozambique as market turns electronic
Corn prices continued to rise in retail markets monitored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s Agricultural Market Information System (SIMA) during the week 11 to 18 July.
In the north of the country, the highest price recorded was 22.86Mt/kg, in Pemba, and the lowest was 19.05Mt/kg, in Montepuez market.
In the centre of the country, the lowest price recorded was 15.00Mt/kg, in the village of Milange, and the highest was 34.29Mt/kg, in Morrumbala.
In the south, the lowest price was 19.74Mt/kg, in Massinga, and the highest was 29.71Mt/kg in Funhalouro.
In terms of price change at the producer level, SIMA said that corn saw a rise of 21 percent in Gorongosa and a fall of 14 percent in Ribáue. Other markets recorded no price change.
In retail markets, the focus was on the price changes in Pemba, with a rise of 33 percent, 20 percent in Chiúre market, 12 percent in Changara, Gorongosa, and 7 percent in Nampula.
Ribáuè market was the only one to see a fall in the price – of 13 percent.
Also according to the SIMA, butter bean prices rose on wholesale markets in Nhamatanda by 20 percent and Goronosa by 15 percent.
At retail level, the price of butter beans fell in Guvuro markets by 20 percent, Nampula city by 15 percent, Chiúre 12 percent, Changara 11 percent, city of Quelimane in 8 percent and Inhambane 7 percent.
Nhemba beans fluctuated in Inhambane and Mutarara, both with increases of 33 percent and 14 percent in Balama, but fell by 14 percent in Vilankulo and Alto Molócuè that recorded falls and by 12 percent in the city of Quelimane.
Several retail markets registered fluctuations in peanut price, with Alto Molócuè falling 40 percent, Ribáue 25 percent and the Homoíne and Guvuro markets 20 percent. Four markets – Quelimane, Mocuba, Nampula and Funhalouro – registered increases of 25, 14, 8 and 7 percent respectively.
