The Coral Sul floating platform off the coast of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, between November 2022 and June 2024, exported 4.48 million tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in 63 shipments.
The figures were announced by the Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, on Wednesday, at Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic (AR), during the presentation of his annual state of the nation address.
According to Nyusi, the achievement symbolizes the realization of a decades-long dream and positions Mozambique as a major player in the global energy market.
The Coral Sul floating LNG Project, anchored in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, started production in November 2022. The destination of the gas produced by this platform are the European and Asian markets.
“A central element of our strategy has been the emphasis on creating added value and diversifying the economy”, he said, adding that the installation of a cooking gas refinery with a capacity of 30,000 tonnes per year is in its final phase.
The President said that the country’s first cooking gas production unit, in the Temane administrative post, Inhassoro district, in the southern province of Inhambane, could begin refining next year, with a capacity for 23 million gigajoules of gas per year.
“We hope that the cooking gas refinery will meet around 70 per cent of the country’s needs, also opening up the possibility of exports to countries in the region”, he said.
The Mozambican government has been meeting International Agencies that are funding the LNG operations in Cabo Delgado in order to update the financing terms to resume the projects, which were interrupted in 2021 when Islamist terrorists attacked Palma town.
The onshore LNG project, headed by the French company TotalEnergies, is budgeted at 23 billion dollars, easily the largest foreign investment in Mozambique to date.
