The Mozambican defence and security forces are continuing to provide military escorts so that trucks can bring food and other essentials to the town of Palma in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
According to Monday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”, the military have guaranteed a route from the town of Nangade to Palma. This has proved a lifeline for the town, which had been running out of supplies. The main road between Palma and the provincial capital, Pemba, was regarded as unsafe due to terrorist attacks.
The first Nangade-Palma convoy reached Palma without incident on 3 February. Other convoys have followed, guaranteeing food supplies for the town, and the resumption of at least some trading.
A large convoy, of 34 trucks, set off from Nangade on Saturday. The convoy was guarded, not only by ground forces, included local militia, but also by helicopters.
“Mediafax” also reports that a ship has set off from Pemba for Palma. If this re-opening of a maritime route is successful, there could be no further need for overland convoys, since, in principle, it will be cheaper to transport goods by sea than by road.
