Construction of the Maringanha Secondary School in the city of Pemba, in northern Mozambique, has been at a standstill for two months.
Construction of the largest school in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, with a capacity for 4,500 students, has been halted for by the suspension of USAID activities, decided by US President Donald Trump.
“The work has really come to a standstill. It is about 60 to 65% complete. And we are waiting for an official announcement,” provincial director of Education of Cabo Delgado, Ivaldo Quincardete said this Saturday (22-03)

Construction started in June, 2023. The school is designed to have 36 classrooms for 4,500 students, in an investment of over 200 million meticais (€2.9 million) financed by the North American development agency.
“If USAID really does not continue, there are partners in good faith who are willing to complete the work,” assured Ivaldo Quincardete.
The halt in the construction of the school, which is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and is the largest built in the province in the last 50 years, occurred in January, following the order of the North American President to freeze all projects financed by USAID for 90 days.
The Trump administration in January began dismantling the US development agency, which had an annual budget of US$42.8 billion (around €39.3 billion) and which alone accounted for 42% of humanitarian aid worldwide.
