The city of Xai-Xai will have a new wholesale market by the end of next year – an infrastructure that responds to the needs of the population and the social, economic and urban development of the city. It is expected that around 700 vendors, including both wholesalers and retailers, and thousands of users will directly benefit from the development, whose architectural design will provide greater safety and convenience to users.
The first stone of the works was laid on Saturday by Governor of Gaza, Margarida Chongo, in a space adjacent to the site of the current market which, as a result of funding from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development through the Rural Extension Fund, will be transformed into an infrastructure built from scratch and suited to the demanding business environment of the capital city of Gaza.
Governor Chongo said in her speech that the project arose within the scope of the promotion and development of social and economic enterprises carried out by the government, highlighting that it is part of a plan to strengthen agri-food value chains with special attention to the marketing of meat and various vegetables, which finds in Xai-Xai an excellent hub when it comes to generating profit.
“It is within the scope of promoting and developing economic and social infrastructures that we are here today to witness the start of the construction of the Xai-Xai Wholesale Market, which is unequivocal proof of the government’s commitment to implementing concrete actions aimed at improving the living conditions of our population, who will ultimately benefit from a place that is easily accessible and where agricultural production from the entire province can be sold,” Governor Chongo pointed out.
Regarding the execution of the work, the governor stressed the need to meet deadlines and quality standards, and particularly urged the local leadership to collaborate over surveillance, so that there was no theft of material or any form of vandalism.
