The Mozambican government wants to revolutionise the national construction materials industry through the creation of national companies capable of using advanced technologies in the production process, as a way of overcoming the constraints which affect the market and customers in the country.
To this end, the ministries of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources (MOPHRH) and Industry and Commerce (MIC) held a roundtable in Maputo this Monday, with a view to identifying concrete measures to promote housing and the national materials production industry.
The event brought together the government, the private sector, educational institutions, academies and cooperation partners to discuss the value chain of production, import, resale, distribution and use of construction materials in Mozambique.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Industry and Commerce Silvino Moreno told Notícias that the country has 807 formal construction materials companies, with the highest concentration in Maputo province (32%) and Inhambane and Gaza provinces, Sofala, Manica, Zambézia, Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado.
In turn, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, said that “the definition of the solution in terms of the type of construction materials to be used in the work, the availability of the material in the national market, the price of its acquisition, the technology required for its production and use and the quality of the material itself have an impact, to a large extent, on the final result of the construction projects”.
The meeting also served to determine the main challenges facing the sector and collect proposals for structuring solutions for the national production of construction materials, identify models to support and stimulate the industrialization of national production and address quality and standardisation aspects, among other points.
Construction materials produced in Mozambique include doors and windows in metal, blocks and bricks, plywood, iron and steel metallurgy, cement, concrete, zinc sheets, tiles, electrical equipment, sanitary metals, valves, paints, glass, glass products and varnishes, among others.
