The frightful conditions in the “maternity ward” at the Mbimbir Health Center in Macorococho, Nhamatanda district, Sofala province, are putting the lives of patients at risk.
The improvised maternity ward operates with a tent as a delivery room without electricity or mosquito nets for women in labour. At night, lighting is provided by candles and a fire burning wood.
This tent is erected in the courtyard of the health post. The floor is bare earth, and on hot days, the top of the tent must be opened for ventilation. When it rains, the tent leaks and the floor becomes flooded, an anomalous situation in a health unit.
The nurse on duty when ‘O País’ visited on Monday afternoon declined to comment on the sorry state of affairs.
Renamo president Ossufo Momade, who is in Nhamatanda, visited the health centre and declared himself shocked by what he saw, adding that the country did in fact have the financial capacity to improve health infrastructure.
In Macorococho, the Renamo president expressed solidarity with the women in labour, supporting them with monetary values.
While there, Momade strolled through the local streets and chatted with vendors at the main market, encouraging them to expand still further.
