Mozambique formally ends its historic term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council today, a position it was unanimously elected to on June 9, 2022. The country began its two-year term on January 1, 2023, alongside Ecuador, Japan, Malta, and Switzerland.
In a preliminary assessment, Verónica Macamo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, noted that the Mozambicans who participated in this mission dedicated themselves fully to ensuring its success.
She explained that various teams assigned to Mozambique’s mission in New York, the headquarters of the United Nations, worked cohesively as one team to fulfill their mandate.
“It is not an easy mission, as issues of peace and security around the world are discussed daily. Unfortunately, in recent times, there have been many sensitive and delicate matters,” she said. Despite these challenges, Macamo considered the mission to be successful, highlighting recognition from the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, who acknowledged that Mozambique brought new paradigms and approaches to conflict resolution.
She pointed out that Mozambique advocates for dialogue between conflicting parties rather than simply passing resolutions condemning one country or another.
“When we talk about multilateralism, we are emphasizing the need to combine efforts so that we can all find solutions to the problems faced by countries, particularly the recent issues related to peace and security,” she underlined.
This was the first time Mozambique served on the Security Council, which is responsible for maintaining international peace and security.
The Security Council is the only international body capable of adopting binding decisions for the 193 UN Member States and can even authorize military intervention to ensure the implementation of its resolutions. It is composed of 15 members: five permanent members with veto power—namely, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, and China—and ten members elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms.
