The kidnapping of Beira businessman Ismail Harun in Maputo on 14 November has placed more than 700 workers in fear of losing their jobs and calling for a speedy investigation.
Jorge Maindessa, Arnaldo and Neyd Barley, who work at the kidnap victim’s company, say the situation is already causing social problems among the company’ workforce, who are beginning to look at the future with some uncertainty. November 14, the day when Ismail Harn was kidnapped in Maputo, has affected not only his family, but also the workers and their dependants.

This Saturday (December 5), the workers were told that they would not be paid their November wages, and were warned that things might get worse if their boss remains in the hands of the kidnappers.
Speaking for company management, Israel Azamo confirmed that companies belonging to Ismail Harn were paralysed, because they need signatures to authorise bank transactions for the payment of salaries and for business transactions with suppliers, both here and in foreign markets. Only the kidnap victim can authorise such transactions.
Azamo fears the worst, saying that the workers’ hopes are placed in the authorities’ efforts to rescue the victim and return him to his family.
