The Criminal Investigation Police [SERNIC] have arrested a former community leader who had been on the run for more than three years after raping a three-year old girl.
The case was detected in 2017, in the village of Marregue, Homoíne district.
According to the Inhambane Criminal Investigation Service, there is no doubt that the 63-year-old community leader Pedro António raped his three-year-old granddaughter.
He was arrested in Quisamane, also in Homoíne district, and had already confessed to committing the crime
A social activist working to safeguard the rights of minors in the district told Miramar that the man had asked the community to solve the problem amicably, and that “a [community] meeting was called” with the confessed child-molester committing to take care of the victim and pay for medical assistance, but he fled when he realised that the case was being investigated by SERNIC.
In the same community meeting, the suspect “committed in writing to never touch the child again” ‘O País’ adds, but reportedly continued the abuse.
The authorities learned of the case through a complaint by the local child protection committee, which further accused the man of having sex with animals [zoophilia], which he denies.
The authorities say that any community leader must be an example to others, and that transgressors “will be exemplary phished”.
This is the first instance of a community leader being arrested for child rape in Inhambane province.
