Mozambique: Government guarantees that overtime is being paid

The Council of Ministers on Tuesday announced the setting up of a commission of inquiry into the causes of the recent spate of road accidents in the country, with special attention to the Maluana tragedy, which killed more than 30 people.
José Mutchine, retired judge counsellor to the Administrative Tribunal, will head the commission, which also includes also Lo Kam Chong and Domingos Guiamba, both of the Order of Engineers of Mozambique; Mário Jacob, member of the Order of Doctors of Mozambique; and Alexandre Nhampossa, member of the Mozambican Association for Victims of Road Accidents.
The commission has been given 30 days to present its report.
Spokesman for the Council of Ministers, Filimão Suaze, said that the commission was the culmination of several government actions aimed at curtailing the current wave of accidents on national roads.
“Not long ago, we held the National Road Safety Symposium, led by the President of the Republic, which gave rise to several guidelines that will serve as a guide for this team. The laws that deal with the licensing of driving schools and companies in the business of transporting passengers will, among other aspects, also be evaluated,” he explained.
The Council of Ministers on Tuesday also ratified donation agreements between Mozambique and the International Development Association (IDA), in the total amount of US$399 million, of which US$299 million is earmarked for girls’ empowerment initiatives.
“These projects aim to improve learning in primary education, access and retention of girls throughout the educational process, both in primary and secondary school and, above all, to solve some girl-related emergencies such as unions. preterm births and precocious pregnancies,” Deputy Minister of Justice Suaze said.
Tuesday’s cabinet session also approved preparations for Mozambique’s participation in the 13th Conference of the Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP), to be held in Luanda, Angola on Saturday, July 17, and which will consider terrorism in Cabo Delgado, among other matters.
