Mayor of Maputo Eneas Comiche is committed to turning the Malangatana gallery into a museum as a way of immortalizing the life and work of Malangatana Valente Ngwenya, an icon of Mozambican visual arts.
The idea was expressed on Friday by the mayor during a courtesy visit to the gallery in Maputo’s Aeroporto neighbourhood.
The visit symbolised the City Council’s commitment, expressed in the Municipal Development Plan 2019-2023, to the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage.
Mayor Comiche said that visiting the gallery was an honour and a privilege, as it serves as an example of how the painter’s children are committed to maintaining one of the country’s unique heritage riches.
“We came here to see how we can establish a partnership with Galeria Malangatana Valente Ngwenya, in the sense of seeing how we can conserve cultural heritage and contribute to the requalification of neighbourhoods,” Comiche said.
The mayor further explained this agreement should culminate in the transformation of the gallery into the Malangatana Valente Ngwenya Museum, because this “is a space that requires studies”.
The Malangatana Gallery is a place to celebrate the life and work of an essential man in the arts and culture of Mozambique, where you can contemplate works by the painter as well as sculptures, canvases, drawings, books and photographs.
The space, Comiche said, has the potential to leverage the cultural and creative industry, and increase domestic tourism in the country’s capital.
In reply, Malangatana’s son, Mutxihini, said that the focus of the visit were points such as the mutual agreement in relation to the preservation of this heritage and the rehabilitation of the Aeroporto neighbourhood.
“Malangatana is part of this area, and the Malangatana Foundation will move forward with a project called ‘Escolinha Vamos Brincar’ aimed at children and in partnership with the municipality,” he explained.
