Combating insurgents in Cabo Delgado and the armed men operating in the centre of the country poses new challenges for Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) charged with guaranteeing public order and security.
This commitment was renewed by Minister of the Interior Amade Miquidade in Maputo on Sunday, moments after depositing a wreath at Praça dos Heroes on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the founding of Mozambique’s police force (PRM).
Currently, the minister said, the police continue to address the challenges of training new personnel in the methods and means of fighting crime, especially organised crime, and tackling all those that seek to destabilise social and economic activities.
Over its 45 years, Minister Miquidade said, the police had secured the respect of the population, and recognition of its vital role in guaranteeing public order and tranquillity.
“The fact that people walk through the streets, towns and cities in peace, is a great achievement for us,” he said.
However, the minister pointed out “people’s safety manifests itself in different ways, which is why the PRM will be on hand to defuse crowding and ensure the use of masks to contain the spread of Covid-19”.
He added that educating citizens about the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation’s recommendations was also the police’s task, and that it would act against all those ignoring coronavirus preventative measures.
Miquidade called the PRM’s 45 years of existence an achievement of the national liberation struggle, where Mozambicans from all walks of life had come together to secure Mozambique’s independence.
