Mozambique’s President, Daniel Chapo, on Wednesday again acknowledged that corruption in public institutions undermines development efforts, promising concrete action and calling for collective efforts in the fight against corruption.
“Many obstacles remain that threaten our development. One of the obstacles is corruption, a phenomenon that weakens public and private institutions, so we will intensify the strengthening of mechanisms to combat corruption in public institutions, public companies including in the private sector,” said the Mozambican head of state, speaking at the now National Independence Stadium during the ceremonies celebrating 50 years of independence.
“The future of Mozambique must be built on the principles of honesty, integrity, justice, inclusion, good governance, ethics, morality and the fight against corruption, which is a moral, patriotic and generational requirement. Our people, each and every one of us, must be ashamed of being corrupt or corrupting others,” added Daniel Chapo.
In addition to corruption, the Mozambican president pointed to natural disasters, rebel attacks and constant post-election instability as other factors undermining the country’s development, indicating that his government is, however, focused on laying the foundations for economic independence.
“We want every Mozambican in the coming years to be free from hunger due to lack of adequate food whenever they need it. We want a Mozambique with a healthy population, sufficiently trained, especially young people and women, actively participating in the creation of wealth and prosperity for families and the country,” said the Mozambican head of state.
Daniel Chapo also called for the creation of a peaceful environment to ensure a future of robust economic growth, with “transparent exploitation of the immense natural resources that Mozambique possesses in its land, soil, subsoil and sea”.
“We want a Mozambique with increasingly strong and efficient public institutions, free of bureaucracy, transformed into facilitators of the business environment and without corruption,” he said, adding that he wants a country “reconciled and moralised, free from organised crime, such as money laundering, kidnapping, drug trafficking, corruption, among other evils that must be fiercely combated”
Mozambique celebrates 50 years of independence, with the main ceremony in Maputo led by the country’s president, Daniel Chapo, and attended by several heads of state, including Portugal’s Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Tanzania’s Samia Suhulu, as guest of honour, Guinea-Bissau’s Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The main ceremonies take place at the historic Machava Stadium, which this Wednesday changed its name to National Independence Stadium, where the country’s first President, Samora Machel, proclaimed independence in the early hours of June 25, 1975, after a struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime that began on September 25, 1964.
In addition to the official speech by the country’s president, the ceremony includes military parades, cultural performances and a message from representatives of citizens turning 50 years old.
