Mozambique’s main coal shipment railway line, which had been closed since Saturday due to a collision between a train and a truck carrying 40 tonnes of corn, has been reopened.
The circulation of coal and general cargo trains between Nacala and Cuamba, “resumed at around 9 pm on Monday [7pm in Lisbon],” Nacala Logistics said in a statement.
The circulation of passenger trains is expected to resume by Saturday.
The accident, without any injuries, happened when the driver of the truck passed a queue at a level crossing and ignored stop signs in Malema, in Nampula province.
The line of around 900 kilometres long, known as the ‘northern logistics corridor’, links the coal mines of Tete province to the port of Nacala, on the Indian Ocean, where the coal is mainly shipped to Asia.
