The National Trade Facilitation Committee (CNFC) announced on Friday (23), in Maputo, the end of the issuance of physical phytosanitary certificates.
From now on, phytosanitary certificates will be issued electronically within the framework of trade facilitation and digitalization.
The CNFC, a body that includes the Board of Directors of the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), the President of the Tax Authority of Mozambique and other entities, made the decision during a meeting that also considered the activity report for the period 2018 to 2024.
Mozambique’s national director of foreign trade, Claire Zimba, explained that since this was the first session, the report that presents the main results was analysed.
“We made a significant assessment of the simplified trade regime that Mozambique has agreed and is now implementing with Malawi. You know that today it is possible for micro operators to make transactions at the borders of up to one thousand dollars per day, a much simpler procedure,” he said.
“We also appreciated in this first session of the steering committee the launch of what is finally the process of digitising phytosanitary certificates,” Zimba added.
Electronic phytosanitary certificates will facilitate the export of agricultural, fishery and other products.
“We were very pleased to hear that the electronic certificate has now been launched, which means that manual phytosanitary certificates will no longer be issued. This is important because if you want to export an agricultural product, you always need to issue a sanitary certificate,” he said.
Claire Zimba also said that, at the meeting held this Friday, the parties reviewed the launch of one-stop border crossings, within the framework of the agreement established between Mozambique and Malawi.
Four border crossings were selected for a pilot phase, two of which will soon become operational.
The CNFC meets twice a year.
