The National Electoral Commission of Mozambique (CNE) will announce the official final results of the municipal elections held on October 10 in Maputo today, said CNE spokesperson Paulo Cuinica has said.
The results that the CNE will announce correspond to what is called the general tabulation. Under Mozambican law, the CNE is in charge of this task, based on the results processed by the district election commissions (intermediate results).
The figures released by the district election commissions have already given victory to the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) in 44 municipalities, and to Renamo in eight, while the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), the country’s third-largest political party, won the municipality of Beira.
Compared to the 2013 election results, Frelimo lost five municipalities to the opposition.
District courts have rejected appeals by Renamo and the MDM against the results in some municipalities.
The Public Integrity Centre (CIP), a Mozambican civil society organisation, estimates that the average participation in the October 10 municipal elections reached a record 60.3%.
The CIP statement called the figure “a significant increase” on previous elections, where participation rates were 46% in 2013, 46% in 2008 and 28% in 2003.
The official announcement had been scheduled fby CNE for 9:00 a.m., according to the election observation platform Sala da Paz, but the announcement has been postponed to 2.30 p.m.
